EMBRACE (2023)
AN INTERACTIVE TEXTILE SCULPTURE OF A HUG AND A PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION OF PEOPLE BEING EMBRACED BY IT.
What is the value we give to our garments? Do we discard them as soon as we don’t like them anymore?
The clothes we wear are more than just an inert object. They are a reflection of our culture, history and personal experiences. Every garment we have ever used in our lives has been impregnated with who we are, our essence is in everything we touch after all.
We leave traces of our existence in other people, and in the things we touch, use and love every day. Our clothes are an utilitarian object that contains our identity, our happy days, our sorrows, our memories.
With this in mind I wanted to use second-hand textiles and clothes, I gathered as many pieces as I could, specially from my friends and family.
Soon I realized I had several hoodies, so I decided to separate the different elements that made their construction possible and found myself surrounded by sleeves. With these sleeves I made the longest hug I could possibly do, by uniting them in a way that respected their anatomy, keeping the cuffs and filling the sleeves in with leftover textiles.
I created a wearable piece, that in a way could be compared with a weighted blanket. It provides the wearer a sense of comfort, a looped and long hug that will accompany you wherever you wear it.
A hug that is impregnated by the memories of every person who wore any of the sleeves that are part of it, a communion between their histories, experiences, memories, stories.
And a new way to create memories with them.
This hug takes away the lack of movement of these discarded hoodies and brings them back to a dynamic experience, it becomes a physical object used as a spiritual medium; through a global way of communicating with the universal language of a hug.
This is a piece that is meant to create movement, to spark curiosity and to make the wearer feel embraced by the invisible presence of those who wore every sleeve.
